GEL NEWSFLASH: Lace Up Your Skates, Lake Ellyn's Frozen Solid! And soon your fingers and toes, too!

skates on at Lake Ellyn

It's time to lace up your skates! One of Glen Ellyn's winter traditions returns with free fun for everyone. The hot cocoa will cost ya 50¢ though.

According to the Glen Ellyn Park District Hotline, Lake Ellyn boathouse and lake opens Thursday, Jan 8 at 4pm for ice skating. Newton Park's hockey rink is open. Skating rink still being worked on as of Jan 11th. Call the skating hotline for updated information - 630-858-0920.

Lake Foxcroft remains closed.

I was skating on Lake Ellyn Sunday, January 11th. The ice was bumpy in spots, but overall in good condition. Remember, this is a Lake, not Wrigley! There's no Zamboni. It's outside. The weather will constantly change the surface. Just a pickup and a plow, and hockey sticks to provide a skating surface. If you're looking for smooth ice go to Center Ice. One word of caution from Sunday, the warming house while nice and warm contains a fowl smell. Wear a scarf and drink the 50¢ hot cocoa on the deck!
