Friday night 10 teams faced off on center stage at Glenbard West’s auditorium in the first Spellapalooza spelling bee to benefit the Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center.

Audience members were given programs, notepads and pencils to follow along with the competition. View photos here.

To kick off the festivities, judges awarded the team with the loudest cheering section a cake from Flour Barrel Bakery. People, young and old, brought noise makers, signs and all around good cheer.

Community Spelling Bee At Glenbard West Benefits Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center

The stage is set, the teams are ready, and the words have been selected. Welcome to Glen Ellyn’s first community-wide spelling bee, SPELLAPALOOZA! Mounted as a benefit for the Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center, the competition will pit teams from Glen Ellyn organizations and businesses against each other starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13 at Glenbard West High School, 670 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The emcee for SPELLAPALOOZA! will be CBS-TV Channel 2 morning anchor, Don Schwenneker.

Like many families, businesses, non-profit organizations, and other municipalities across our nation, the Village of Glen Ellyn is juggling the financial woes of having to trim costs with finding new revenue sources to make up for budgetary shortfalls.

One avenue the Village Board is contemplating is to enact a 1% sales tax increase using its home rule authority. The increase would apply to the sale of products except: groceries, drugs (both prescription and non-prescription), and vehicles. Excluded from the tax are services like massage, medical treatments, and haircuts.

GEL FUN: Glen Ellyn Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

On March 17, 2009, everybody will be considered Irish for the day. It is one of the many traditions born from this great holiday. Everyone is included- most people will wear green clothing, eat corn beef and cabbage and drink green beer.

In Ireland, this is considered a religious holiday. History states that most families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon with a feast of Irish bacon and cabbage. Any Lenten prohibitions against drinking and eating meat were waived for this celebratory day.

With the economy looking like Saturday's forecast - rain and dark skies - spirits couldn’t have been any higher inside St Petronille’s for their 19th annual school fundraiser.
