Village Officials Confirm Presence of Emerald Ash Borer in Glen Ellyn

If you think we're seeing a little more green this St Patrick's Day in Glen Ellyn, it's because our village has an unwanted tiny green guest - not to be confused with the friendly Leprechauns roaming the streets today. They're a shiny green bug that kills Ash trees it infests.

The economic landscape is affecting many towns across the nation and, unfortunately, the Village of Glen Ellyn is not immune.

If there’s one important topic we’d want to share with everyone in Glen Ellyn, this one’s it. It’s not the most sexy topic (unless you're into dressing and undressing lots of numbers!), but it certainly affects everyone who lives in Glen Ellyn or owns a home or business.

Like many families, businesses, non-profit organizations, and other municipalities across our nation, the Village of Glen Ellyn is juggling the financial woes of having to trim costs with finding new revenue sources to make up for budgetary shortfalls.

One avenue the Village Board is contemplating is to enact a 1% sales tax increase using its home rule authority. The increase would apply to the sale of products except: groceries, drugs (both prescription and non-prescription), and vehicles. Excluded from the tax are services like massage, medical treatments, and haircuts.

GEL FUN: Glen Ellyn Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day

On March 17, 2009, everybody will be considered Irish for the day. It is one of the many traditions born from this great holiday. Everyone is included- most people will wear green clothing, eat corn beef and cabbage and drink green beer.

In Ireland, this is considered a religious holiday. History states that most families would attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon with a feast of Irish bacon and cabbage. Any Lenten prohibitions against drinking and eating meat were waived for this celebratory day.

The Citizens for Glen Ellyn Preservation monthly meeting will take place at the Civic Center in the Clayton room on the second floor, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.

This special meeting will be a unique opportunity to learn about upcoming events. Village Trustee, Michelle Thorsell will discuss where we go next with the downtown strategic plan, and update us on recent issues before the Village Board.

Candidates for Village President, Gary Fasules and Mark Pfefferman will introduce themselves and answer questions about their visions for the future of our village.

Village Manager Steven Jones announced at a budget workshop Monday the decision to reduce staff payroll by laying off five Glen Ellyn village employees, and changing one-full time position to part-time.

The exact positions were not released, though the last day for the five employees is this Friday. Village President Vicky Hase echoed disappointment about the decision to let village employees go.
